Remote sensing and human activities:
a new research path for social sciences and human health monitoring

Earth observation is key to understanding the interactions between the humankind and the environment. The use of multiple sensors on board of satellites, as well as airborne and, more recently, UAV platforms allow extracting information about biophysical variables that are important with respect to air and water quality, and in general well-being in urban areas. The combination of these measurements with land use/land cover maps at unprecedented level of details allow determining models to monitor threats to human health, such as vector borne diseases, urban heat waves and so on.
